Resistance to Tyranny Is Obedience to God — John Knox
Before there was an American Revolution, there was a Scottish Reformation.
John Knox was not known for timid sermons. The fiery Scottish Reformer boldly confronted queens, challenged corrupt rulers, and proclaimed the Lordship of Christ over every earthly authority.
The phrase "Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God" has long been associated with the Presbyterian and Covenanter tradition that influenced generations of Christians on both sides of the Atlantic. Whether standing against ecclesiastical corruption or political oppression, Knox and his spiritual descendants believed that rulers are accountable to God and that no king possesses absolute authority.
These convictions crossed the ocean with Scottish and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians who would later play a major role in the fight for American independence.
